Hammond Water Works Department

Meet Board of Directors and Staff

The Hammond Water Department is a municipal owned and operated utility.

The Water Department receives no revenues from sales or property taxes, operating solely on funds from rates and service charges.  The Business Office is responsible for meter reading, billing, accounts receivable and payable, personnel records and customer service.

In addition to supplying more than 23,934 metered service connections within its own incorporated boundaries, Hammond conveys and sells potable water to the cities and towns of Dyer, Griffith, Highland, Whiting and Munster, Indiana, as well as, South Holland, Calumet City, Ford Heights, Burnham, Lynwood, Lansing, and Chicago Heights, Illinois. Chicago Heights then supplies water to Thornton, Glenwood, and South Chicago Heights.

The Hammond Water Works Department has three elevated storage tanks:

• 173rd and Harrison: 2.5 million-gallon tank
• 165th and Columbia: 1.5 million-gallon tank
• 169th and Parrish: 2.5 million-gallon tank
• Hohman Avenue: one underground storage tank, 6 million-gallon tank

Distribution Department

The responsibilities of the Distribution Shop are meter installation and water main maintenance and installation.

The Distribution Department maintains:

• 400 miles of water main
• 32,000 service connection
• 1,769 fire hydrants
• Over 3,000 valves

The Distribution Department flushes hydrants twice a year during the spring and fall. The flushing promotes fresh water availability as well as assisting the Hammond Fire Department ensuring the hydrants are in proper working order.
